Kitchen Organizer Tips For Utensils
By Sherrie Le Masurier
When it comes to storing kitchen utensils there are many great kitchen organizer tips I can offer up. Your best option however is one that works with the flow of your kitchen.
Let’s start by you answering the following questions.
What types of cooking related tasks take place in your kitchen?
Aside from flipping pancakes, stirring sauces, and serving soup do you also spend a lot of time chopping vegetables?
After considering the many tasks performed in your kitchen, turn your thoughts to where and how the related utensils should be stored. If you simply toss random utensils in a drawer or container you’ll have to sort though the entire collection, just to find the one you want.
To save extra steps, you’ll also want to store your utensils as close as possible to the area of your kitchen where they’ll be used. For instance, your everyday flatware should be stored near your everyday dishes, your spatulas and ladles near your stove, and your knives near your cutting board.
Here are some more kitchen organizer tips on how to properly store your kitchen utensils. Hopefully they’ll inspire some storage ideas of you own.
Use Trays
If you plan to store your utensils in drawers you’ll find divider trays indispensable. They come in plastic and metal and fit neatly inside of a drawer. The best part is they have separate sections for forks, knives, and spoons. For larger utensils individual trays also come in handy.
Designate Drawers
Dedicate specific drawers for specific kinds of utensils. Designate one drawer for flatware, another for larger utensils, and a third for "miscellaneous" tools. A piece of non-slip foam matting (the kind used under area rugs) keeps larger utensils from moving around. This kind of matting can easily be cut to size.
Countertop Containers
If you have sufficient counter space, consider using a decorative container to store ladles, oversized spoons, spatulas, and other long utensils. One idea would be to store your most frequently used utensils in this manner and the rest in drawers or from hooks.
Hang from Hooks
What about installing a rod on your kitchen wall and hanging your utensils from hooks? This is a great option since most utensils today have holes at the end of the handle and will hang easily from ‘S’ hooks. You can purchase an actual utensil rod or simply install a thin towel rack or curtain rod. Another option would be to hang utensils from screw hooks affixed to the inside of a cabinet door.
Knife Storage
Knives are best kept near your cooking area but out of the reach of children. Storage ideas include hanging from a magnetic strip, keeping in a butcher’s block (with slots for each knife) or if you have holes or leather strips on the ends of your knives hanging from a high set of hooks.
