Kid Room Décor And Organizing Ideas For Shared Kid Rooms

By Sherrie Le Masurier

When it comes to shared kid rooms it’s important you take into consideration the general kid room décor as well as the organizing styles of both children.

Once you have two of duplicate pieces of kid furniture like beds, dressers and desks you can then start thinking about the kid room décor and any organizing ideas you have for the room.

Each child’s individuality can be expressed by how their own space is decorated. One of my favorite ways to decorate shared kid rooms is to start by consulting each child in regards to her individual color preferences and then to speak with both children together to come to an overall agreement about the main colors that will used in the room. Encourage your children to either decide on two different but coordinating room colors or one main color in two different shades.

I then give each child her own set of kid room décor items in her special color and consult her as to any particular visions she has for her part of the shared room.

In order for shared kid rooms to flow from a kid room décor standpoint it’s important that there are some consistent design elements in place that bring the room together. It’s also a good idea to have a storage system in place which encourages organization from both parties. An early discussion with each child about how she likes to organize her things is also valuable.

To eliminate major kid room design and kid room décor conflicts it’s important that you harmonize your child’s individual spaces. By carefully meshing two individual tastes into one overall environment you can create a welcoming shared kid room space that’s ideal for both sleep and play.

Keep things simple, separate and color-coded. Add variety and distinction to each child’s area by incorporating brightly colored storage bins and laundry hampers.

Consider adding striped and patterned accessories to an otherwise basic kid room décor backdrop.

Bed linens are another great focal point for individual tastes. Think floral and plaids or stripes and solids. Reversible bed coverings are also ideal in shared rooms.

Consider stackable storage cubes that not only divide the space but also serve as storage compartments for each child's belongings.

When it comes to physically dividing shared kid rooms consider screens with hinged panels for children who have a real love/hate relationship. The hinges make folding and storing easy when your kids are having a good ‘shared’ space day.
