How to Select the Right Kid Room Paint Color

By Sherrie Le Masurier

When it comes to decorating kid rooms one of the biggest decisions parents and children need to make is to decide on a kid room paint color you both like.

Selecting the right kid room paint color is easy if you gather up a little inspiration first. Consider useful resources like paint chips, fabric swatches and photos of decorated kid rooms you like.

You and your child may even want to put together an idea book which also includes photos of furnishings and accessories you can envision in your kid’s room. Catalogs and magazines are a great source of images. Or using a color printer, print out some of your favorite online images.

Once you’ve put together a collection of ideas sit down with your child and go through your idea book for any common colors and themes. Is there a particular color that would bring all the items you like together and give your kid’s room a coordinated look?

If so it’s time to start paint shopping. (If not, go back and gather a few more samples for your idea book.) To make sure you’re really on track with the right kid room paint color, I recommend opting for a trial size jar of paint or paints in the colors you like and painting it on a poster-sized board so you can get a real sense of whether the color is right for your kid’s room or not.

Put the sample board in different places around your kid’s room to see how it looks at different times of the day and night. Do you like it as much in natural light as you do in the evening with artificial light? Also how does the color look with any furnishings and accessories that will be staying in the room?
